How To Train Your Dragon 2 is a visual masterpiece. The animation and character details are something that can be enjoyed and admired by guests of all ages. The directors really did their research on how to make some of the scenes look more realistic and believable. You feel like these animated dragons could be real. There is one flight scene with Hiccup and Toothless that had me actually say "wow" but I obviously can't describe it to you because then that would be a spoiler. Just know that they worked together on a maneuver that seemed like it would be realistically (and aerodynamically) possible.
The film had its beautiful moments but it also had its "give a child nightmares" moments. Some of the scenes could be too scary for small children. There is also a major scene that will probably have most of the theater shedding a few tears. During my experience at the screener there was actually crying kids and parents. Kinda makes me question why they would release something like this on this particular weekend.
Overall, I thought the film was awesome and action packed. Lots of humor for both parents and children to laugh together. The only thing I'm on the fence about is if some of the content may be too emotionally heavy for the smaller children. Seems like they decided to do things the old school Disney way and get all up in our feelings, there was even a musical type scene thrown in there somewhere.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 is "Terry McFly Approved", if I have time to see it in IMAX I will probably go see it again. It's one of those movies that truly deserves the IMAX treatment.
